- HISTORY | Mysite 1 Copy
SAWTELL FC HISTORY In 1968 Alex Jeff, Ron Bentley, and Gary Moy started up a soccer club in their local area. At the time there were two teams. One Under 10s and one Under 12s. In 1974 the first women's team was formed and in 1976 the Senior club was started. In 1996 both the junior and senior clubs came together to create one club. Sawtell FC has grown from strength to strength and in 2018, our 50th year, the club was one of the largest on the north coast with over 500 registered players. Come and join Sawtell FC and become part of history! Our first women’s team was established in 1974 by an eager group of teenagers. They attended a meeting- back when they were held at Elizabeth Street Sawtell, to ask for jerseys. The men were surprised that a bunch of 15 year old girls wanted to play football. They managed to get a couple of old ones (that didn’t really fit- but they made do) where they then began playing teams like Grafton, Bellingen, Woologoolga and North Beach, coached by Paul Moffat- one of the girls Dads, and training at what is now known as Sawtell Commons (the grassed are opposite Sawtell Primary School). It was hard going as women soccer wasn’t widely supported back then, the original team fizzled out- but new players took up the torch in later years. We’re thankful for these women that pioneered females in football. In a time where it was a male dominated sport- its encouraging to see how far we’ve come in supporting all our players. Some members from the original team were Kerrie Porter (Snell), Kerri Klaus, Christine Capararo (Moffat), Narelle Flemming, Lyn Drummond (Bale), Glenda Ward, Ann Witherdin, Sonia Rayner, Karen Kennedy, Kerrie Mayled (Watt), Joy Saggus and Debbie O’Brien were some of the original members. Thankyou ladies for your story and your history in our club- showing just what women can do when we work together!! The story of our first Women's team SAWTELL FC'S FIRST JUNIOR TEAMS 1968

CONTACT SAWTELL FC Get in touch Submit Thanks for submitting! Who do I contact regarding registration and teams? Kim Grech is our Registrar. This means that she deals with all things registration. She is also the person assigning Junior Non-Comptetitive Registration and some Junior Competitive teams. Her email is registrarsawtellfc@gmail.com How do I know when my team is playing? You will need to download the Squadi App and register your details. Once you are following your team it will provide up to date information. Otherwise you can follow our social media platforms- although they may not always show current information. When does the season start? Registration opens from January 5th 2026 , it closes the 1st of March. Senior competition begins on the 9th-12th of April/ Senior Mens training is every Tuesday and Thursday 6-7:30, Senior Women's training is Monday and Wednesdays 6-7:30. Junior training begins mid March Junior Games begin April 18th- September . You will be contacted by your c hild's individual coach regarding specific dates/ days of training. Jewellery/ Undershirt Policy There is a no jewellery policy within football. Earrings have to be removed, they are not allowed to be covered. Undershirts and skins also have to be the same colour as the main colour of your kit. If 2 people are wearing different colours referees may ask one of the players to change. Please note- these are policies set for us, we as a club do not determine these policies, but must abide by them. Frequently Asked Questions Can I do payment plans? If you have a ZipPay account you are able to generate a one off card which you pay off in instalments . Payment plans are not something we generally offer, but contact registrarsawtellfc@gmail.com to discuss your options. How do I find field closures? Field closures are usually updated on local council websites - however these are not always up to date. Your coach will have direct contact with the club President, who will pass on this information as it becomes available. Please note this is sometimes very close to your game as we always try and play games if the fields have dried out. You can also follow our social media accounts . Why are some fields closed and others open? Depending on how much rain an area gets, some fields may be more wetter than others. Some fields are higher on hills and have good drainage, others are lower and water sits on them for longer. Also- some fields are not owned by council- so clubs are able to decide whether they'd like to play on them or not. Our club fields are council owned and they are the ones who decide whether to shut the fields. Other general questions... Q- What are uniform requirements? A- Each child will need to purchase green shorts and socks from our gear link. Shirts are provided and teams wash their shirts. Q- When does gear arrive? A - Our new kit for 2026 arrives at the end of February. Once your order is fulfilled our Gear Co-ordinator will be in contact. We hope to have all gear available to pick up and purchase at our orientation day on the 14th of March also . Q- My child is gifted at soccer. Can they play up? A- The evidence is that playing up doesn't always help player development and we would normally encourage players to play in their relevant age groups . There are also some restrictions in playing up but these vary with age groups and genders. It's best to contact the registrar with your specific questions.
